This paper offers a rigorous step-by-step methodology for either developing or testing theories and contains specific and detailed guidelines for IS researchers to follow in carrying out positivist case studies. The methodology is largely inspired by the work of Yin (1994), Eisenhardt (1989), Miles and Huberman (1994) and several others who are strong proponents of and have wide experience in this research approach. It also relies on previous key contributions to the case research method in IS (Benbasat et al. 1987; Lee 1989). We illustrate how this methodology can be applied in IS research to help reveal new perspectives and empirical insights. In addition, the optimal qualities associated with several of the proposed concepts and the techniques and tools included in the methodology are presented. We believe that the illustrative case studies presented in this paper should be regarded as exemplars of the application of the positivist case research method and, hence, we strongly encourage IS researchers to follow their respective approaches. Using A Positivist Case Research Methodology To Test Three Competing Theories-In-Use Of Business Process Redesign

We test three practitioner theories-in-use of business process redesign derived from the business process reengineering (BPR) literature using a positivist case study of a U.S. company that undertook BPR. The evidence refutes the domi-

Positivist single case study research in information systems: a critical analysis

Positivist, single case study is an important research approach within the information systems discipline. This paper provides detailed definitions of key concepts in positivist, single case study research and carefully analyses the conduct and outcomes of the Sarker and Lee study that examined the role of social enablers in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems implementation, and was pre...

Critical Research in Information Systems: The Question of Methodology

Considerable ambiguity surrounds the question of empirical research methodology in critical information systems (IS) research, as is the case with other critical social sciences. While some research methods and techniques are closely related to the positivist research approach (experiments, surveys, and statistical equation modelling) and others to the interpretivist approach (qualitative case ...
